FAYNAN Mashat Hair Powder with Sidr, henna, amla and lavender

What Is Mashat? The Scented Hair Tradition of Yemen and the Gulf

In Yemen and across the Gulf, hair care has long been about more than washing. Mashat is one of the traditions behind that habit: a blend of botanicals, ground together, mixed with water and worked through the hair on wash day, leaving it soft and lightly scented. This guide explains what Mashat is and how to use it.

What is Mashat?

Mashat is a traditional hair powder made from several botanicals ground into a fine blend. Recipes vary from family to family and from region to region. Mixed with water into a soft paste, Mashat is applied to the hair, left to rest, then rinsed away.

What is in a Mashat blend?

FAYNAN Mashat Hair Powder includes:

  • Sidr leaf (Ziziphus spina-christi), long used across the Middle East to wash the hair. Read more in our Sidr entry.
  • Henna leaf (Lawsonia inermis), long used across the region in hair rituals.
  • Amla (Phyllanthus emblica), the dried fruit of the Indian gooseberry tree, familiar in South Asian hair-care traditions.
  • Lavender (Lavandula), which gives the blend its soft, herbal scent.

The complete ingredient list appears on the product page and label.

Will Mashat color my hair?

Because it contains henna, Mashat may leave a subtle red tint. It is most visible on light, grey or color-treated hair, and barely noticeable on dark hair. Mashat is for hair only: not for the skin, eyebrows or eyelashes. Do a strand test and a skin allergy test 48 hours before each use. To learn more about henna itself, read How to Use Pure Henna on Hair.

How to use Mashat, step by step

1. Test

48 hours before, do a strand test and a small skin allergy test behind the ear.

2. Mix

Stir one to two tablespoons of powder with warm water into a soft, spreadable paste.

3. Apply

Smooth the paste through damp hair in sections, from roots to ends.

4. Rest

Cover your hair and leave the paste for up to one hour.

5. Rinse

Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then wash with a gentle shampoo.

Mashat with Sidr

Mashat can be stirred into a Sidr paste for a single, scented wash step. Use the Sidr as the base and add a spoonful of Mashat. Our guide How to Use Sidr Powder for Hair explains the Sidr method.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Hair only. Strand test and skin allergy test 48 hours before each use.
  • Contains henna: may tint light or grey hair.
  • Keep away from the eyes.
  • Keep the pouch sealed and dry.
  • Stop using any product if irritation occurs.

A ritual that belongs to you

Mashat is one of the most personal rituals in the region: not something to show, but something to carry quietly through the day. For the full wash-day picture, read our guide to Middle Eastern hair rituals.
