Hands distributing oil through hair lengths before washing

How to Use a Pre-Wash Hair Oil: A Step-by-Step Guide

Some of the most considered moments in a beauty routine happen before anything is washed away. A pre-wash hair oil is one of them: applied to dry hair and scalp, left to rest for a short while, then shampooed out. It is a simple step, and a long-standing one. Oiling hair before washing is familiar in many beauty traditions, including across the Middle East and South Asia, where it has long been part of wash day.

This guide covers the essentials: what a pre-wash oil is, how much to use, how long to leave it, and how to wash it out cleanly.

What is a pre-wash hair oil?

A pre-wash oil is used before shampoo, not after. That timing is what separates it from a finishing oil, which is applied in a small amount to clean, styled hair and stays there. A pre-wash oil is designed to be rinsed away. What remains is the feel it leaves behind: hair that feels softer and conditioned, with natural-looking shine.

How to use a pre-wash hair oil, step by step

1. Start with dry hair

Apply to dry, unwashed hair. Oil spreads more evenly on dry strands, and you can see where it is going. Brush or finger-comb first so the oil moves freely.

2. Apply in sections

Part your hair into a few sections. Warm a few drops between your palms, then apply along each parting at the scalp before smoothing the rest through the lengths and ends. Sectioning prevents the common mistake of saturating one area while missing another.

3. Massage gently

Use your fingertips, not your nails, and work in slow circles across the scalp for a minute or two. Then distribute through the lengths. The aim is a light, even coat, not dripping hair.

4. Rest

Leave the oil on for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Clip your hair up loosely or wrap it in a towel. This is the quiet part of the ritual: time to read, run a bath, or simply pause.

5. Shampoo thoroughly

Apply shampoo to hair before adding much water. It helps lift the oil more easily. Massage, rinse, and repeat if needed. Longer or thicker hair often needs a second shampoo. Condition as usual. For more detail, read How to Wash Oil Out of Your Hair.

How much oil should you use?

Less than you think. A drop count is only a starting point, because hair length, density and texture all change what feels right.

  • Short or fine hair: a few drops, focused on the scalp and mid-lengths.
  • Shoulder-length hair: a little more, worked evenly through the lengths.
  • Long, thick, curly or coily hair: work in sections and add as you go.

If your hair still feels coated after drying, use less next time or shampoo twice. Adjust one thing at a time so you can tell what made the difference. How long should you leave it on?

For FAYNAN Botanical Hair Ritual Oil, we recommend 20 to 30 minutes. Longer is not automatically better: a consistent, comfortable routine matters more than an extended one. Always follow the directions on your own bottle. Read How Long to Leave Oil in Your Hair for more, including whether overnight oiling is a good idea.

How often?

Once or twice a week, on your usual wash days, is a natural rhythm. Let the ritual follow your routine rather than the other way around.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Before first use, test on a small area of skin.
  • Keep oil away from your eyes.
  • If your hair is color-treated or recently bleached, try a small, discreet strand first.
  • Check the ingredients for anything you are sensitive to. FAYNAN Botanical Hair Ritual Oil contains sesame and wild pistachio (a tree nut).
  • Stop using any product if irritation occurs.

The ritual, made simple

A pre-wash oil asks for very little: a few drops, twenty minutes, and a moment for yourself before the wash. FAYNAN Botanical Hair Ritual Oil was made for exactly that moment, with Wild Pistachio (Butm), Sidr and Black Seed in a modern botanical blend.
