A Weekly Wash-Day Routine: Oil, Sidr Wash and a Slower Ritual
Wash day can be rushed, or it can be a ritual. Across the Middle East, it has long been the second kind: oil before the wash, a gentle botanical rinse, a little scent, and time. This guide sets out a simple weekly wash-day routine you can follow as it is, or shorten to fit your week.
The routine at a glance
| Step | What you use | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Oil before the wash | A pre-wash hair oil on dry hair and scalp | 20–30 minutes |
| 2. The wash | Sidr paste or your usual shampoo | 15–30 minutes for Sidr |
| 3. Optional: scent or color | Mashat for scent, or pure henna for color | Occasionally, not every week |
| 4. Condition and finish | Your conditioner, then a drop of oil on dry ends | A few minutes |
Step 1: oil before the wash
Begin with dry hair. Apply a small amount of a pre-wash oil to the scalp along a few partings, then smooth it through the lengths and ends. Massage gently, clip your hair up loosely, and let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes.
The Botanical Hair Ritual Oil is made for exactly this moment: wild pistachio (butm), Sidr and black seed, for hair that feels softer and conditioned, with natural-looking shine. A single oil such as Pure Date Seed Oil works too.
Not sure how much to use, or how long to wait? Read How Much Hair Oil to Use and How Long to Leave Hair Oil In. The full method is in How to Use a Pre-Wash Hair Oil.
Step 2: the wash
The traditional way: a Sidr wash. Mix two to three tablespoons of Pure Sidr Leaf Powder with warm water into a smooth paste, apply it to damp hair and scalp in sections, rest for 15 to 30 minutes, then rinse slowly and thoroughly. Sidr gives a soft, low lather; it is not meant to foam. Read How to Use Sidr Powder for Hair for the step-by-step.
The everyday way: your usual shampoo. Apply it to the oiled hair before adding much water, work it in, then rinse. A second shampoo helps if your hair still feels oily. See How to Wash Hair Oil Out.
Many people alternate: Sidr one week, shampoo the next.
Step 3, occasionally: scent or color
These are not weekly steps. Add them when you want them.
- For scent: Mashat Hair Powder is a blend including Sidr, henna, amla and lavender, worn through wash day for a soft herbal scent. Because it contains henna, it may leave a subtle red tint on light, grey or color-treated hair. Read What Is Mashat?
- For color: Pure Henna Leaf Powder gives red-copper tones that build with each use. It is a separate, longer ritual. Read How to Use Pure Henna on Hair.
For both, do a strand test and a skin allergy test 48 hours before each use. They are for hair only.
Step 4: condition and finish
Follow with your usual conditioner, then rinse. Once your hair is dry or towel-dried, smooth a single drop of oil through the ends if they feel dry. Pure Argan Oil or date seed oil both work. This is a finishing oil, used lightly; read Pre-Wash vs. Finishing Hair Oil for the difference.
How often?
Once a week is a good rhythm for most people, and the routine above fits into one unhurried evening or weekend morning. If you wash more often, keep the pre-wash oil for your main wash day and use your usual shampoo in between. Adjust to how your hair and scalp feel, not to a rule.
Adapting the routine
- Fine hair: use less oil and keep it to the scalp and mid-lengths. See Hair Oiling for Fine Hair.
- Curly or coily hair: work in sections and give the rinse extra time. See Hair Oiling for Curly and Coily Hair.
- Covered hair: keep oil to wash day rather than under a scarf. See Hijab Hair Care.
Good to know
- Test any new product on a small area of skin before first use.
- Keep oils and powders away from the eyes; if contact occurs, rinse well with water.
- The Botanical Hair Ritual Oil contains wild pistachio (a tree nut) and sesame.
- Stop using any product if irritation occurs.
A ritual in two products
If you would like to begin with the essentials, the Wash Day Ritual Set pairs the Botanical Hair Ritual Oil with Pure Sidr Leaf Powder: steps one and two, together. For the history behind each step, read our guide to Middle Eastern hair rituals.
