How to Use Dill Seed Essential Oil
Dill seed essential oil is used diluted, never on its own: mix 1 drop into a teaspoon (5 mL) of carrier oil and massage the blend over the body, or add a few drops to a diffuser. Its scent is fresh, green and slightly sweet, the scent of a herb familiar in Levantine kitchens as shibit.
What is dill seed essential oil?
Dill seed essential oil is distilled from the small, flat, ribbed seeds of dill (Anethum graveolens). Dill leaves are scattered fresh over rice, salads and yogurt across the region; the seeds hold a concentrated aromatic oil. FAYNAN Dill Seed Essential Oil is a single ingredient, with nothing added.
The rule: always dilute
Essential oils are concentrates. They must be mixed into a carrier oil before they touch the skin. If you are new to them, read Essential Oils and Carrier Oils first.
| Use | Dill seed essential oil | Carrier oil |
|---|---|---|
| Body | 1 drop | 1 teaspoon (5 mL) |
| Larger batch | 3 drops | 1 tablespoon (15 mL) |
| Bath | 1 drop, mixed into the carrier first | 1 to 2 teaspoons |
| Room | A few drops | In a diffuser, following its instructions |
A fresh body oil, step by step
- Pour one teaspoon of Pure Date Seed Oil or Pure Jojoba Oil into a small dish or clean bottle.
- Add one drop of dill seed essential oil and mix well.
- Smooth over damp skin after the shower, avoiding the face.
Damp skin helps the blend spread thinly. The full method is in How to Use Body Oil After the Shower.
In the bath
Mix one drop into one or two teaspoons of carrier oil, then add it to a full, warm bath just before you step in. Never drop essential oil straight into the water. See How to Use Bath Oil.
Pairing scents
Dill is fresh and green. For something warmer, try Frankincense (how to use it) or Turmeric (how to use it). Use one essential oil at a time while you get to know how your skin responds.
Before first use: the patch test
Mix your blend, apply a little to the inner arm, and wait 24 hours. If there is no redness or itching, it is ready to use. Our patch test guide explains each step.
Who should not use it
- Not for use on children.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have epilepsy, or are under medical care, ask a healthcare professional before use.
- Never apply undiluted, and keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Do not apply to broken or irritated skin. Stop using it if irritation occurs.
- For external use only; do not swallow.
Mix small, store well
Make only as much blend as you will use within a few days, in clean glass, and label it. Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from heat, light and open flame, and out of reach of children. A drop at a time, a 30 mL bottle lasts a very long time. More in How to Store Natural Oils and Powders.
